30 x 22 inches

For years I have been making drawings of interwoven lines – sometimes these are just doodles, sometimes they are more elaborate. Initially inspired by Manzanita growing on the slopes of Mt. Tamalpais, Sinew has evolved as a physical response to these drawings, giving sculptural form to lines using a substructure of tin foil and paper mache and a surface made of wax. Organic and rambly, this series of handmade constructions float and move and relate to each other in a multitude of ways. As I’ve experimented with various forms and combinations, I have realized that there is not a right way to arrange them – rather they suggest infinite possibilities where the eye is pulled through the series of twist and turns creating a variety of movement and connection.

Harvesting color derives from the springtime ritual of picking fresh flowers and hanging them on a wall to dry. The strips of color evoke the fleeting visual bounty of Spring, and represent our desire to preserve this bounty beyond its natural life cycle.
